World Accordion Day is celebrated each year in early May, marking the anniversary of the first accordion patent filed on May 6th, 1829 by Cyrill Demian in Vienna.
Cyrill Demian, an organ and piano maker, submitted the patent alongside his sons, Karl and Guido, describing a small, portable instrument with metal reeds and bellows that made it possible to play both melody and chords with ease — even for beginners.
The patent was approved shortly afterward on May 23, but May 6 is recognized around the world as the instrument’s official birthday.
The very first World Accordion Day was celebrated in 2009 and continues to be an annual tradition!
Join us on May 2nd at Waller’s Coffee Shop in Decatur, GA from 12 pm - 4 pm!
